Description
Cáscara sagrada belongs to the Rhamnaceae family and is used for the dried bark of the trunk and branches, which contain anthraquinone derivatives, tannins, mineral salts and bitter constituents.
The anthraquinone constituents (mainly cascarosides) have a cholagogue and laxative effect at low doses or a purgative effect at higher doses. This plant is widely used for occasional constipation (caused by changes in eating habits, travel, emotional factors, medication, etc.).
For the treatment of chronic or habitual constipation, laxatives that increase the volume of the fecal bolus and a diet rich in fiber are recommended.
