Cholesterol is a type of natural fat, present in all cells of the human body and necessary for healthy living. However, it can become a cardiovascular risk factor when its levels in the blood are elevated. Cholesterol in the human body comes from two sources. The first source is endogenous cholesterol, which is synthesised by the liver. Some of this cholesterol is expelled through the blood via VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein) and the remainder is converted into bile acids. The second source, exogenous cholesterol, comes from food, usually of animal origin and its derivatives. Throughout the day, the cholesterol present in the intestine is composed of 2/3 endogenous and 1/3 exogenous origin.
CONTROCOL helps control LDL cholesterol levels.
Controcol contains active ingredients with proven efficacy.
RED YEAST RICE:
It is a traditional Chinese product from the fermentation of a type of yeast on rice. This process produces compounds called monacolins, one of which is monacolin K. Monacolin K, known as lovastatin, is prescribed to lower blood lipid levels.
GAMMA-ORYZANOL:
The mechanism of action is not yet known. However, studies have shown that taking gamma-oryzanol with a high cholesterol diet increases bile flow and total bile acid production by 12% and 18% respectively. Also, there was a significant increase in faecal excretion of cholesterol by 28% and bile acids by 29%, and a 20% decrease in cholesterol absorption.
PLANT STEROLS:
Substances present in plants such as vegetables and nuts. Plant sterols, by having a molecule similar to cholesterol, compete with it at the intestinal receptor level, thereby reducing the absorption of exogenous cholesterol.
Plant sterols are effective in improving the lipid profile of people with hypercholesterolemia at the minimum dose recommended by the FDA.
CHROMIUM:
Research suggests that a diet low in chromium increases the risk of developing arteriosclerosis. Chromium supplementation has been shown to be effective in lowering triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol circulating in the blood, and increases HDL cholesterol.
Q10:
The use of statins is often associated with a variety of myopathy-related symptoms. Statins inhibit the production of coenzyme Q10, an essential cofactor for mitochondrial energy production. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ-10) is a vitamin-like substance found throughout the body, but especially in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
MILK THISTLE:
One of the effects associated with statin use is hepatotoxicity. Statins lead to an increase in transaminases, which usually occurs in the first 3 months of treatment. Based on available clinical evidence, it can be concluded that the use of silymarin (the principal active ingredient in Milk Thistle) is effective against hepatotoxicity.
